there's something I see in strong leaders over and over again
we think we have a confidence problem
we don't
we have a decision problem
there is a cost for our internal negotiation
as leaders we know what needs to happen
we can see the performance gap
and we can feel the boundary that needs reinforcing
we know the decision that's overdue
and yet we wait
we tell ourselves we're thinking
we're weighing it up
we're being measured
but every time we delay a clear decision
our team feels it
hesitation leaks
ambiguity is contagious
the longer we negotiate internally
the more we train others to question us
when we hesitate we quietly lower the standard
not dramatically just quietly
we tell ourselves I'll act when I feel more confident
but confidence isn't the prerequisite for authority
it's the byproduct of it
confidence doesn't precede authority
it follows enforced standards
we don't act because we feel certain
we act and then certainty stabilises afterwards
that shift changes everything
when we hesitate it's rarely because we're unclear
it's usually because we're protecting something
likeability
harmony
our image
the illusion of being easy to work with
the real question isn't what should we do
it is what are we protecting that's costing us our authority
that one's uncomfortable
but it's honest
we succumb to the illusion of being thoughtful
sometimes we disguise hesitation as sophistication
I'm gathering more data
I want to reflect
I'm being strategic
and sometimes that's true
but often it's just avoidance dressed up as maturity
discernment is strategic
delay is emotional
there's a difference
we know it when we're honest
authority doesn't collapse in dramatic moments
it drifts we let one behaviour slide
we soften one boundary
we postpone one correction
three months later we feel resentful
that resentment doesn't start with the team
it started with one unmade decision
drift is really subtle
but it compounds
there's always a gap between the leader we describe ourselves as
and the leader our calendar reveals
we say we value standards
but if they're not enforced
they're preferences
we say we hold boundaries
but if they're not reinforced
they're suggestions
that gap is where authority erodes
and we feel it long before anyone else names it
here's the emotional truth
choosing identity feels destabilising
but once we decide
we lose our excuses
we can't blame circumstances
we can't blame the team
we can't blame timing
decision removes the hiding place
that's why we avoid it
not because we lack capability
but because we know it locks us in
senior leaders decide faster
correct faster recover faster
not because they're reckless
but because they trust their judgment
if we're honest our hesitation is not humility
it's mistrust of ourselves
and mistrust it slows everything
here's the quiet move
the one shift I come back to
instead of asking what should we do
ask what would the leader we say we are do
and then just do that
no announcement
no drama
just alignment
we don't need more confidence
we need a decision
stop negotiating with yourself
choose
then act
authority is a decision
make it
