Reclaim Your Edge: How to Reset Leadership Clarity

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that doesn’t come from working too hard. It comes from thinking too hard. 

From over-managing, over-focusing, and over-correcting, all in the name of getting things right.

For a long time, I thought leadership meant having all the answers. That if I just worked harder, thought deeper, and stayed more across every detail, things would run smoothly.

But during one particularly high-pressure period, that belief nearly broke me.

I was juggling competing deadlines, managing tight deliverables, and trying to hold everything together. Somewhere along the way, I stopped doing what I do best, leading strategically. I started micromanaging the people around me.

At the time, I told myself I was “helping.” 

In reality, I was reacting. 

I was frustrated that things weren’t moving fast enough, anxious about the outcomes, and caught in a cycle of overthinking and under-trusting.

The result? 

My team started avoiding me. They stopped sharing ideas. They waited for instructions instead of taking initiative. I had turned into the very leader I never wanted to be — reactive, controlling, and drained.

It wasn’t until a conversation with my coach shifted everything. 

He said, “Liz, you’ve gone from leading to managing. You’re in the weeds. You’ve lost your edge.”

That was hard to hear. But he was right.

My clarity had slipped. And when clarity goes, confidence follows. The team feels it before you even say a word. Energy drops. Communication slows. And soon, you’re leading a group that’s technically performing but emotionally disengaged.

 

That experience taught me something powerful: clarity isn’t a luxury in leadership, it’s the anchor. 

Without it, even the most capable leaders start spinning.

After that conversation, I stopped trying to do everyone’s thinking for them. Instead, I created space — for reflection, for listening, and for trust to rebuild. I learned that clarity doesn’t come from controlling everything; it comes from reconnecting to your intention and letting your team reconnect to theirs.

Now, whenever I feel that creeping sense of reactivity or over-control, I pause and ask myself three questions:

1. What actually needs my attention right now?

2. What am I holding onto that I can delegate or release?

3. How do I need to show up to bring calm and clarity to the team?

Those three questions have become part of my daily rhythm — a small but powerful ritual from my High-Performance Energy Playbook. Because when you start your day with clarity, you end it with confidence.
