Who Are You Being? The Real Source Of Leadership Authority
Jul 20, 2026All month we have been circling one idea. Authority is not about how you look. It is about who you are being. So let me bring it all home, because there is one distinction that ties the whole thing together.
When we walk into a room worried about how we are coming across, managing the image, trying to be a version of the leader we think we are supposed to be, we are leading from the wrong place. That is the source of everything we have talked about this month. The performing. The drifting. The exhaustion. It all comes from a part of us that is preoccupied with being seen a certain way.
And when we are being run by that part of us, we cannot be calm, because we have got something to protect the whole time.
But when we let go of that, when we stop asking what do they need me to be and start simply being who we actually are, everything changes. We are not managing an image anymore, so there is nothing to defend. That is where the calm comes from. That is where the steadiness comes from. That is the presence people trust without being able to explain why.
It is the shift from being who we think we are supposed to be, to being who we actually are. And it is not about adding more. It is about letting go of the performance, and trusting that we are enough to lead with.
Here is the honest part. Most of us are drifting from this, and we cannot see it, because the performing is so automatic it just feels like us. We do not notice the cost until we are depleted, or until something in our leadership stops working and we cannot explain why.
